Congress recently made a historic move to lift up millions of care workers who are the heart of our economy, with a $3.5 trillion budget proposal that includes a transformational investment in care workers. With this budget, Congress has shown their support for President Biden’s original infrastructure blueprint, which included a $400 billion investment in home and community-based services (HCBS). Our elected officials are joining the care movement — now, we need them to go all the way.

We’re not in the clear — for Congress to seize this once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a care economy that benefits all workers, we need to make sure the largest investment in Medicaid and HCBS is included in the final budget.

Write to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer today and urge him not to cut care workers from the final budget package.

Send a Letter

To create good jobs for care workers and ensure that our loved ones have the services they need to live with dignity, we need Congress to keep Biden’s full $400 billion commitment to care — the largest possible amount — in the final budget.

Join the Care Can’t Wait day of action that includes the Care Is Essential march and rally and the Communities of Care launch event, featuring speakers, a tour of an interactive art installation, food trucks, live music and more.

This event is one of 40 actions taking place across the country on the same day as part of a national day of action led by care workers and consumers demanding action from Congress to pass the American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan with investment in care and support for caregivers and recipients of care.

Can’t make it in-person? See all the ways you can get involved and take action!

Host organizations: the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA), Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Hand in Hand: the Domestic Employers Network, Caring Across Generations (CAG), Care Can’t Wait campaign.

Schedule of the day:

9:00am – 11:00am ET — Care Is Essential Rally & March from the Capitol to Freedom Plaza
11:00am – 2:00pm ET — Ribbon-cutting Ceremony for “Communities of Care” art installation with live music performances from local bands, interactive activities, testimonies from care workers and families, and food trucks (at Freedom Plaza)

Are you a domestic worker and want to get involved? Check out our worker resources for the day of action.

About the Care is Essential March

The Care Is Essential march and rally will include homecare, child care and nursing home workers, along with individuals and families that rely on care, joining together to march from Congress to Freedom Plaza to call on Congress to pass the $400 billion investment in the Biden administration’s American Jobs Plan to expand access to home and community based services and strengthen the care workforce.

Location: Union Square, Washington, DC

About the “Communities of Care” Art Installation

We will end the march at Freedom Plaza with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to launch a new art installation featuring portraits of family caregivers and care workers with the individuals they provide care for. The launch will include a speaking program with care workers, consumers, supporters, and Members of Congress.

Location: Freedom Plaza, Washington, DC

Event Details

NDWA, Caring Across Generations, Hand in Hand and the Care Can’t Wait coalition worked with artist Paola Mendoza to produce the “Communities of Care” art installation. Running from July 13th-17th at Freedom Plaza in Washington DC, this installation, created on a map of the United States, will transport the audience into the reality of care that takes place in our homes and communities, showcasing the beauty of that care while also portraying its challenges, and making a case for investment in a robust care infrastructure that can support home- and community-based care for all.

Domestic workers have been organizing to win increased protections at the state, federal, and international levels for generations. NDWA is proud to stand in solidarity with workers who make all other work possible in the U.S. and around the world and to be a part of the global domestic workers movement.
