With 10 states, 2 major cities, and the District of Columbia having passed domestic workers bills of rights and protections, we continue to push for bills of rights in more states and cities as well as federal recognition and protection for domestic workers.
Domestic workers do the work most precious to us: caring for our homes and loved ones so we can go to work and go about our everyday lives with peace of mind.
But they still don’t have the basic rights and dignity they deserve.
Home care workers, nannies and house cleaners have historically been excluded from basic labor protections. Due to the racial legal exclusions dating back to the New Deal era, domestic workers are poorly paid, lack benefits and economic security and are susceptible to discrimination and abuse.
Ten states, two major cities, and the District of Columbia have passed domestic workers bills of rights or protections due to the relentless leadership of domestic worker organizing. Yet, federal recognition and comprehensive protection for this workforce is long overdue.
That’s why we are working with Senators Kristen Gillibrand and Ben Ray Luján and Representative Pramila Jayapal to introduce the National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, which will establish rights for millions of home care workers, nannies and house cleaners in the U.S.
